Emergency Bypass Pumps providing 150,000 GPM relief to Slidell’s Southwestern neighborhoods.
As the main Pumping Station responsible for the drainage of the southwestern portion of the City of Slidell, the Schneider Canal Pump Station (SCPS) functionality is critical to the city’s drainage needs.
Due to the extensive damages sustained by the station during Hurricane Katrina, the station’s six 62,500 GPM Flygt pumps (375,000 GPM total) were left idle, and the station’s entire draining capacity was lost. Facing the need to restore immediate drainage functionality to the station to protect lives and property, Slidell required a Project Worksheet for temporary bypass pumps to provide protection during the pump station reconstruction period.
Due to FEMA’s initial refusal to fund this project, securing emergency funding for temporary bypass pumps entailed the use of a position paper that was sent to FEMA’s National Headquarters in Washington DC. This strategic action resulted in a Project Worksheet (Grant funding) competition within 17 days of dispatching the position paper.
